Forget the string of championship wins recorded by the Mercedes F1 team through to 2019: in 2020 the F1 Mercedes to be raced by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas is all-new, particularly in the all-important sidepod department. These developments, and others, are analysed in this video by Craig Scarborough, one of the world's leading F1 technical commentators.

  • I don't see Mercedes having quite the aero advantage as they've had. Though their tire management is exceptional and should stay there. What will be key, imo, is whether Mercedes can increase speed from the power unit to close the gap on Ferrari's domination in straight line speed. Ferrari have attempted to address their speed in corners and increased their downforce with a more RedBullesque look. If Ferrari can close the gap in cornering speed that could give them an advantage if they maintain their speed advantage. As a Mercedes fan, I'm hoping for more speed on the straights to match Ferrari.

I'm hoping to see the Honda PU last a full 7 race stint. But as it hasn't as yet I still have some concerns. It seemed RBR were very strategic with their PU changes. To my mind it is easier to build a fast PU than a fast reliable one. Either way it's going to be a corner of a season.

  • I see a trend of emphasis on Aero Dynamics as a predetermining factor of performance. However, often the more crucial technical aspects of power production and delivery is neglected or outright ignored. Which in the case of Mercedes dominance in beginning of the Hybrid Era it was engine. Later we would see Ferrari unleash amazing straight line speed , which was due to some strange MGU-H manipulation. I just feel that the true potential of these cars is far more than what we are shown in Aero body work. I really hope F1 would allow or enciurage the teams to show off their technical innovations that power these cars around the track.

    Chris DChris DMuaj më parë
    • @SUPREME MEGATRON if that was true then why do teams get so upset with Ferrari burning oil, or manipulating the MGU-H. Or RedBull running a different fuel flow meter? Also, why do many teams suspect Ferrari of cheating? Is it because their Aero package is giving them an unfair advantage over the other teams?

      Chris DChris DMuaj më parë
    • Aerodynamics have ruled F1 since the 70s, maybe even earlier. Look at Williams with the exact same engine as Merc, they can't switch on the tires because they don't have enough downforce. Tires and aero re the biggest performance differentiators in F1, and it may still be so in 2021

    • The problem is that it’s all this guy talks about. Mercedes need to get a bit more power. If they are down 30 hp they will be beaten and become a 2nd level team.

      Beagle76Beagle76Muaj më parë
    • Whereas aero changes are something you can immedeatly identify and discuss, we can't talk about all the other car aspects. Suspension internals, power unit, packaging, cooling, electronics. These are all things we will never truly get to see. That's not just how f1 works, that's how every business works.

  • Because of the current regulations, if you stripped of the colours and had them in the bare carbon fiber, you'd have a hard time telling all 10 chassis apart, except for the shark fins. Hopefully for 2021, the chassis will be different. But as usual it's the paint jobs that set the cars apart. And as normal, the cars debuted this week will have little in common with the cars run next December.

    Charles DameryCharles DameryMuaj më parë
    • You can tell the cars apart just from looking at their noses.

    • I disagree with that, the cars are significantly different to one another actually. Any avid watcher would be able to see the differences especially between the top3. Going by what you said, the differences will be even more subtle in 2021 because the new regs seek to lower costs by simplifying the cars. Not sure I’m right in saying this but 2021 was the first time F1 built a model of the next gen car. I think it’s on the F1 website, I highly recommend checking it out. Your 2 points about the paint and upgrades dumbfounded me. This is formula racing, of course the cars are going to be similar... the livery is main method to differentiate the cars so. Are you implying that teams shouldn’t be able to upgrade the car during the season? Why not? If you had a team would you not want to upgrade the car during the season, it’s allowed in the regs? I hope you reply because I’m really struggling with your view of F1, feels like you don’t watch often.

I’m rooting for Ricciardo to have a good season and I’d like to see HAAS stabilize because I don’t want there to be only 9 team in 2021. That’s as much as I care really. • @Quercus 53 eyy man, i appreciate if youre a Ferrari fan, its all good we all fans of F1, i think we all love the core idea but come on dude some of the things youre saying right there, thats not factually correct bro. FIA basically stood for Ferrari International Assistance lool I also dont remember when Merc first left F1 but i know for sure the modern team rejoined in 2010 so i dont know how we fit in with the last 20 years. Also when i started watching F1 2008, the McLaren and Ferrari were very close in performance, Kimi the WDC in 07, Spa that year was suspicious. Besides even if there was no parc ferme now a days, are you saying you lot wouldve beaten us in the last 6 years? Nahh mate i dont see it ... We've been too good unfortunately, a well oiled machine. Anyway I think 4 teams get a 'heritage' bonus, Merc, Ferrari, Williams and the Bulls. Ferrari obviously get the most, theyve been there since the beginning and they also have a veto in the contract. Are you looking back with nostalgia? If you are, then i have to disagree with that way of looking at F1 because its biased. Don't seem to be looking at it factually, i do agreee that maybe the rivalries were more intense, combined with the danger of the cars, i see how the drivers would seem more heroic and competitive than they are now. I personally dont like 2021 regs but ill have to evolve with it, i need to look at the potential. Sit back relax, the 2020 season is going to make you eat those words.

The fact that they were so open with cooling and straight line speed ‘problems’ last year is incredibly suspect. Since when are teams transparent with their weaknesses?? As for tyres: pirelli are bespoke Merc tyres, so no risk of any problems there.

    Tristan ShawTristan ShawMuaj më parë
    • @SUPREME MEGATRON Wow. Answer this: What two companies would agree to conduct a highly illegal test in secret?? Why would pirelli agree to this?? This isn't a one off occurrence, this speaks to a larger partnership, one that has shown itself since (2019 tyres were tested in 2018, in all but 1 instance merc crushed it with these tyres then they became confirmed for 2019). This partnership amounts to match fixing and you're just like 'whatever'. Also, learn some manners.

I remember when everyone complained about the double battery on the Ferrari. I assumed the teams complained because the battery should be one unit provided by FIA or their approved suppliers. Cheers 👍🏾

      McNixon DubeMcNixon DubeMuaj më parë
    • @McNixon Dube there are no spec batteries, each team buy their own batteries from 3rd party suppliers, but they are limited in maximum mass of batteries, 25kg. It is the 100kg/he fuel flow rate which hold the engines from making more power. The PU manufactures chose to compete on the basis of fuel efficiency rather than seeing who could dump in the most fuel to make more power. There are very few spec parts on these PUs, one of which being the McLaren built ECU, that does not really hinder the PU manufactures. I think I remember the in cylinder pressure sensors being made a spec part, but I can't remember totally.

  • Thanks for the review. It is great to get some appreciation of the changes from the 2019 car and their potential effects. Am I right in assuming that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will be the only teams with the budgets to keep up in season development of the 2020 car while designing and developing for the 2021 regulations? So the usual top three teams, with Mercedes firmly as favourites.

    • @SUPREME MEGATRON isn't one of the regulation changes to standardise gearbox components? Looks like the Mercedes third car design team are redundant. This is the start of the cost cap ;-)

      JakobusVdLJakobusVdLMuaj më parë
    • @JakobusVdL the only part of the 2022 car that they might be thinking about or designing is the gearbox, because of the long lead time necessary for those, but they might still be months away from signing off on the 2021 gearbox.

    • @JakobusVdL It's way too early for 2022. It's crucial to nail the 2021 regulations, so most of th resources will head tgat way. Being the first team to nail a new big set of regulation changes will have a super strong base to build on. 2014 Mercedes, 2009 Red Bull etc.

    • Thanks@Bahamuttiamat that is very interesting, but not surprising. Mercedes have certainly raised the bar on most technical and organisational aspects of F1 over the past decade. Now the 2019 season is over, they'll have be able to focus on just two cars, or do you think they'll have moved onto work on a 2022 car????

      JakobusVdLJakobusVdLMuaj më parë
    • Mercedes is currently developing 3 cars at the same time - according to outgoing engineer Aldo costa. In 2019, they worked on the 2019, 2020 and 2021 car. They do no mess about.

    • @Catherine Morgan yeah these Muppets here pretending like Bottas can really battle Lewis over a season to win a WDC. Delusional people here, Lewis has mastered the art of winning WDC'S and it'll continue till he retires.

    • @Ainz Ooal Gown Sama , if anybody can beat Lewis it will be Bottas and he is catching up, also Lewis will lose his "cool" more easily than Bottas if things start to go south for him even when it is not his fault. PS. Bottas would get a lot more support here if his team mate was not British.

Over at Red Bull, Horner & Marko have the countenance of contenders ready for game on! Hopefully more of Scrabs within the show this season. A celebration ahead for PW at 100,000 subscribers by mid-season. Well deserved!
